Detroit Teachers Tell Their Own Stories at 'Tale the Teacher'

October 9, 2018

Over the weekend, a group of Detroit teachers gathered inside the Lyft Lounge at MusicTown Detroit for a night of storytelling at "Tale the Teacher."

Organized by Western International High School counselor Joy Mohammed, the event, which is now in its third year, featured a variety of perspectives and anecdotes from educators around the Detroit region.

The evening's speakers included Parish Halsell of Eastern Michigan University, Silver Danielle of Detroit Leadership Academy, Calvin Nellum of Jalen Rose Leadership Academy and Mohammed herself.

"I’m only doing dynamic activist teachers," Mohammed told Chalkbeat Detroit prior to the event. "These are people who do very unique things in their classroom."

The overarching theme of the night was certainly the passion that teachers in Detroit possess, and their unmatched commitment for their students.

Keep your eye out for the video of the stories, and learn more about Tale the Teacher here.
