How Barrett Strong Gave Eliza Neals her Mantra

July 27, 2018

Blues singer and Detroit native Eliza Neals recently stopped by the MusicTown studios for an interview and live performance on Behind the Mic with Pam Rossi.

During the interview, Neals chronicled her long and impressive career, from her beginnings as an operatic vocal music student at Wayne State University, to her crash-course in singing the blues at music clubs around the city, to her eventual introduction to her mentor and friend, Motown's Barrett Strong.

While speaking of what Strong has taught her through the years, Neals revealed the one piece of advice he gave that's become her mantra of sorts, especially while performing live shows.

"This was given to me by Barrett Strong and it goes like this: 'One monkey don't stop no show,'" she said. "So if one person gives you trouble and you feel like you can't go on, believe me, you can."
